Installation

Installation Requirements

The following are the requirements for installing Chinese Toolbox FREE.

  1. You must be logged on as an administrator of your computer.
  2. Your computer should be running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista. 64-bit versions of Windows are now supported. The installer will not install Chinese Toolbox FREE on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT. The program has been tested on US English versions of Windows 2000, XP, Vista, Vista 64-bit, and Chinese versions of Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It has undergone minimal testing on a traditional Chinese version of Vista. It has not been tested the 64-bit version of Windows XP or on any other language version of Windows.
  3. The screen resolution must be at least 1024 by 768.
  4. Your computer must have at least 128 MB of RAM (memory).

Starting the Installation

ChineseToolboxFREEInstaller.msi and ChineseToolboxFREEInstaller.exe are the installers for Chinese Toolbox FREE 9.1.2. You only need one or the other. After downloading and saving the installer to your computer, double-click on the filename to launch the installer program.

Security in Windows XP

If you’re running Windows XP, you may see a security warning dialog. If such dialog does appear, check that the Publisher setting displays “Aaron Todd Sherrill”. This is what you should see; it indicates the software’s digital certificate is valid.

XPInstalling(1a)

If “Unknown Publisher” appears for the Publisher as shown below, cancel the installation!

XPInstalling(1b)

Chinese Toolbox FREE 9.1.2 is digitally signed, and “Unknown Publisher” should never appear during installation. The appearance of “Unknown Publisher” indicates that the installer has been modified, most likely through corruption while downloading. It is possible for someone to intentionally and maliciously modify the program code, but the problem would normally be from corruption during download.

If you’re trying to install an older version of Chinese Toolbox FREE, the Publisher setting will show “Unknown Publisher”. Versions prior to 9.1.2 were not digitally signed. If such is the case, you should first download the newest version of Chinese Toolbox FREE, then proceed with installation.

Security in Windows Vista

The protection provided by the digital certificate in Chinese Toolbox FREE manifests differently in Windows Vista. In Vista you begin and proceed with the installation normally. After clicking on the Install button in the “Ready to Install” dialog, a “User Account Control” dialog should appear. If the installer file is in good condition, you should see the program name (Chinese Toolbox FREE) and the publisher’s name as listed in the digital certificate (Aaron Todd Sherrill). Refer to the following:

If the installer has changed in any way since it was signed by the publisher, the file is corrupt. A User Account Control dialog similar to the following will appear:

VistaInstalling(6b)

If such is the case, cancel the installation! You may need to download the file once again. You may need to download it from a different download website. Chinese Toolbox FREE eventually should be available from numerous download sites.

Typical Installation

The first installation dialog to appear after starting the installer (after a possible Security Warning dialog in XP) is shown below. The screen shots shown here are for a Vista installation. Except for the security issues described above, the content of the installation dialogs are the same (window and border appearance will vary) for the different version of Windows.

VistaInstalling(1)

Click on the Next button to proceed. The License Agreement will appear.

VistaInstalling(2)

VistaInstalling(3)

If you choose a folder other than the default, you must ensure other users of your computer have access rights to that folder; otherwise, they will not be able to run Chinese Toolbox FREE. Click the Next button when you’re ready to continue the installation.

VistaInstalling(4)

At the “Ready to Install” dialog (above), click the Install button to install the application. The “Installing Chinese Toolbox FREE” dialog will appear (below). If you’re installing on Vista, a “User Account Control” dialog should appear as described above under Security in Windows Vista.
